How do I get started?

What kinds of pets do you care for?
We have a wide range of experience with all types of creatures. Dogs and cats comprise most of our clients, but we also help with fresh and saltwater fish, hamsters, rabbits, turtles, and lots of other animals. What are your rates?
Prices start at just $14.95. Dogs Love Running! is your best value. Guaranteed. Unlike most other pet care providers, we have one, low, all-inclusive rate without any extra charges aside from a small surcharge for visits made on major holidays. This makes it easy for you to remember what the charge is. Plus you know that we’re always giving you the absolute best price. How do I pay for service?
You can pay by cash, check, or credit card. Payment is due at time of service. If we’re visiting more than once per week, most people find it easiest to pay the entire week’s bill upfront for that week, but you can also pay for each individual visit separately. Back to Top

Will the same person always visit my pet?
We have a great “double team” system where we have 2 team members assigned to each pet. This benefits you because we have one primary person who will always come unless they are sick or otherwise unavailable. Then, the secondary person can fill in. This way, we build a fun and loving bond because your pet pretty much sees the same person on each visit while, at the same time, we’ll always have a backup available if needed. Back to Top

How do you determine when you’ll visit with my pets?
When we meet for your initial consultation, please let us know all you can about your pet's normal activities. We’ll then pick a preferred target time when we’ll come. Although we’re typically on time, please allow a one-hour time window before and after the target time for when we’ll arrive. Back to Top

What’s the purpose of the free in-home visit?
We provide a free in-home consultation so you can get to know us and so that we can get to know you and your pet. We can learn a lot more about each other in person, which helps us to ensure that we provide the best care possible. Back to Top

Do you offer a free trial?
Yes. We want to make sure that you and your pet are happy. That’s why we’d like to offer a free trial for most of our services. Back to Top

Do you exercise more than 1 dog at a time?
All of our services are private. So, your pet(s) get individual attention, love, and exercise. Back to Top

Where do you exercise my dog?
We typically stay around your home and neighborhood, where your dog is most familiar and comfortable. Back to Top

How do I know that you’re staying for the entire time I’m paying for?
We always leave a daily "report card" that lets you know that we were there and provides some details as to what we did. We also can provide GPS tracking that shows you the day/time we arrived, how long we stayed, where and how far we went, and some other details. Pretty cool (and unique), huh?!? Back to Top

What happens if my schedule changes while I’m away?
If you’ll be coming home early or staying later, please just let us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate those changes as best we can. Back to Top

Do you administer medication to pets?
Yes. And, unlike many other pet care services, we do not charge extra for providing medication. Back to Top

Is it possible to get a one-time-only service? Do I have to sign a long-term contract?
People love us because we have no minimum visit requirements. Use us once or, like most people, use us again and again and again. Back to Top

If I have a question or a problem, who can I call?

How do you screen your team members?
We’re proud to say that most of our team members proactively sought us out and wanted to work with us because they thought our concept was so exciting. This benefits you because you know that everyone on our team loves what they do - which means that they’re interested in doing a great job. We have a thorough screening process too. In fact, we interview only about 10% of everyone that applies. From there, all team members authorize reference, background, and criminal checks. We also only hire people that are dedicated and available to be with us for the long term. Back to Top

What do you need from me during the initial consultation?
Please be able to tell us what you’re looking for and what would make you and your pet happiest. From that, we can tell you exactly what we can do for you. Please also provide us a key or a garage code while we’re there. Most clients have us hold on to this so that we can visit if you need us unexpectedly. We can also arrange to leave your key with you afterwards. Back to Top

How much notice do you need to start service?
We have a lot of happy clients and so we’re typically very busy. So, the more notice you give us, the better. However, we can usually accommodate whatever you need, whenever you need it. Just contact us. Back to Top

Can I make last-minute arrangements?
Yes. We know that unexpected things sometimes happen. That’s why you can call us at any time with or without notice. Plus, if we can’t help you for some reason, we’ll be happy to try and help you find someone who can. Back to Top

Do you work on holidays?
Yes. A small surcharge will be added for visits made on major holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.). Back to Top

What happens if it snows or rains?
Unless there is dangerous weather, we come all year ‘round in all types of weather conditions. If you’d rather us not visit during certain types of weather, please let us know. Back to Top

How is Dogs Love Running! different than other services?
The key difference is that it’s our goal to help your pets live longer and behave better through exercise. It’s our mission to Make Pets Happy and, in our time-crunched world, exercise is what they need the most, but, ironically, is typically what they get the least. Back to Top

Are you bonded and/or insured?
Yes. We have millions (yes, millions) of dollars of insurance as well as an additional bonding policy. In fact, we have double the amount of coverage that is recommended by Pet Sitters International (a pet sitting industry trade group). It costs us a pretty penny, but you and your pet are worth every cent. Having this coverage means that you don’t have to worry about unexpected and unintended incidents because our policies protect both us and you. Back to Top

Why shouldn’t I use a friend, neighbor, or super-cheap pet care service?
If you’re really wondering about this question, then the simple and blunt answer is that if a dollar or two is the difference between you putting your pet’s safety and well-being in someone’s hands who may not know what they’re doing instead of us (or another reputable pet care service), then you may not be the right type of client for us. How can Dogs Love Running! help my pets live longer and behave better?
In many ways, pets are just like humans. Their bodies and minds directly respond to the foods they eat and the exercise they get. Regular exercise in moderation can help your pet in a variety of physical ways and may extend their life (possibly by many years) due to overall better health. Your pet may also behave better due to the fact that, just like humans, exercise can reduce anxiety, stress, hyperactiveness, and other negative traits that can lead to unwanted and/or destructive behaviors. Many of our clients will tell you first hand that their pets are clearly better behaved after a few weeks of walks/runs. Back to Top

My dog doesn’t run - can you still help me?
Yes, small dogs or those that may not physically be able to run can (and should) at least walk with us via our dog walking services. Back to Top

My dog just lays around. Why would he/she need exercise?
These are often the dogs that can most benefit from exercise. If your dog seems to have a clear lack of energy, exercise can often fix that problem. Just like with humans, the more your dog eats right and "works out" (walking OR running), the more likely they are to develop higher levels of positive energy. Back to Top

My dog plays in the house. Why would we need your service?
Many dogs need a minimum of 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise every day to stay in top shape and they often don't get the amount exercise they really need. We have to get their heart pumping and paws running! Running, or at least walking, a few times a week can do wonders for your dog's behavior, attitude, and energy levels - plus, of course, cut down on body fat. Back to Top

How many hours can a dog run in a week?
Certain breeds can easily log up to 35 hours a week, according to the book Running With Man's Best Friend by Davia Anne Gallup (Alpine Publication, 1986). It really depends on the type of breed, your pet’s age, and the dog’s current condition. Back to Top

Are certain breeds better suited to running?
A walk around the block or a 15-minute romp in the house is minimal exercise and is often NOT enough to meet the average dog's needs. Active breeds such as dogs from the sporting, herding, hound and terrier groups, northern breeds, and virtually all adolescents require much more exercise. However, a few breeds do require very little exercise to maintain good health and don't need to necessarily run if they can get some basic and regular walking in. Back to Top

At what age should I start exercising my dog?
In general, after 8 months is usually appropriate for many dog breeds to do more than just casual playing and romping around. Ideally, an exercise plan should be established when your dog is still a puppy and continue throughout your pet's life. As your dog ages, exercise tolerance and requirements can be adjusted. Why is exercise important to senior dogs?
Exercise is important for your elderly dog for many reasons. First, exercise helps maintain a healthy body weight. Being overweight may lead to a number of health problems and places excess stress on your pet's heart. When the heart doesn't function properly, other organs may suffer including the brain, lungs, liver and kidneys. Over time, these problems may become severe enough to cause life-threatening conditions. Osteoarthritis is degeneration of joints. This problem may develop during a pet's geriatric years causing pain and discomfort. Excess weight on these joints can speed up the disease. Moderate exercise may help to delay the continued degeneration of joints that are affected with osteoarthritis. Your elderly dog's mental health may also benefit from exercise. Activity keeps oxygen and other nutrients like glucose (blood sugar) at optimum levels in the brain. The brain is like every other organ in the body in that it requires good nutrition. Back to Top

Is it important for me to consult a veterinarian before starting a running program?

Gives Us Peace Of Mind

We moved in in November and have been using Dogs Love Running! ever since. We first met with the owner, Amy, for an interview process and to go over the services DLR provides. Amy was so kind and immediately hit it off with our dog Presley. Amy took the time to learn about Presley's "special needs," even though we didn't anticipate needing the walker to have to do anything like feed him or give him medications. It gives us peace of mind that DLR is aware of the issues, in the event we would need them to provide those services. Presley gets a 30 minute walk every day with the same walker, and we always look forward reading to the nice note the walker leaves at the end of each walk. They Love My Pets As Much As I Do

I found Dogs Love Running! in the fall of 2013 and could not be happier with them. They are very accommodating and flexible with their visits, in the first place, which is very important to me as my schedule can sometimes change at the last minute. When they visit, they always leave a brief note about what occurred during the visit (for example, letting me know if the dog ate dinner while they were there), as well as a personal note about their interaction with the pets. More importantly, though, they love my pets as much as I do. I know that my pets are well-taken care of during their visits, and I never worry about my animals. My wife and I have been using Dogs Love Running for almost four years now. They've never disappointed to provide our dogs with the best possible care. Visits are noted with cards, telling you how your dogs did on their walks or during the visit/play time. The company is very willing to make special adjustments to suit your dogs' needs, be it delivering medications, feeding them, watering them, or even something as particular as playing with a "special" toy that the dog loves. Ownership is very personable. Heidi knows each dog personally and individually trains walkers by accompanying them to visit dogs. My dogs *love* Heidi and the walkers; I've actually been home a few times for their sessions, and both of my dogs positively freak out as if a family member is coming over. DLR Fit The Bill

When we knew we were moving to Naperville and would need a dog walker immediately, I contacted a bunch of places. DLR fit the bill: 1-2 consistent walkers, daily notes, easy scheduling/payment, and reasonable pricing. Chris even came by on a Sunday to do a 1st visit. A Very Happy Dog

Amy was great with our 10 year old German Shepherd/Husky. We were on vacation for a week, and very worried about leaving him at home as he has seizures and health issues and needs to take medications. Amy was very professional and friendly at our first meeting and made me feel very comfortable about leaving our dog in her care. While we were gone we received updates via email and she always answered any questions we had. We have been using Dogs Love Running for about 8 months now and we love it! The walkers are extremely friendly, and our dog loves them all. The hours they work are extremely convenient as well, they will walk your dog as late as 8:30 or 9 at night 7 days a week. A Heartfelt Thank You!

I just wanted to send a heartfelt Thank You to you and your team. I honestly can't remember how long ago you guys first started caring for our dogs (8 years maybe?), but it feels like forever. As I'm sure you know, Curtis and Pepper were our children before we had children and we built a life and world around them. Even after we had (human) children, the dogs were still special and spoiled and central to our lives. Your team became a regular part of their lives and our household. Whether it was their walks during the week or overnights or holidays or vacations, I can't let tell you how nice it was to know that they would be cared for by people who understood them. While Pepper was a very laid back dog, those of you who worked with Curtis know that he was *special*. He was enormous, loud, drooly, anxious, and hated to be left. It took special people to see past this big dog's frantic behavior and know that it was anxiety, not aggression, and be patient and work to understand him. Curtis would excitedly "talk" to whoever would come to walk him and then immediately trot away because he enjoyed being chased down to put his leash on. Pepper would patiently wag freeze and wait for her turn. As the kids got older, they figured out who the walkers were and would either happily chat at them and tell them everything that was happening (Emmett) or shyly hide and watch them from around the corner before loudly yelling goodbye (Caroline). While everyone on your team is wonderful and we have appreciated all of them,I would be remiss if I didn't take a moment to say something about Hunter. I cried when I said goodbye to Hunter because she had started to feel like a regular in our house and an extended part of our family. It was so clear that she loved and understood our dogs and also so clear that they loved her and looked forward to seeing her. She is a special person and I am so grateful that our dogs got to spend so much time being doted on by her.

I can't say enough how much we love Dogs Love Running. What you get with them over other dog walking companies/apps is the excellent customer service. As a new customer, Heidi comes to meet your dog so she can introduce them to whatever walker will be coming. I have called Heidi in desperation when we were in a bind and she walked our dog immediately. Their scheduled walkers are beyond amazing. Like They Were Their Own

The experience was outstanding. They provide visit notes and pictures when they come to visit that way you know your pups are doing well. Heidi went above and beyond the call of duty when our A/C in our apartment was not acting properly during the summer heat. She took the initiative to contact maintenance and get the issue fixed. Our dogs didn't have to sweat in the heat. Heidi and her team take care of our dogs like they were their own.

Heidi, Chris, Hunter and their team offer an affordable, professional and well run service that is superior to anything else in this area and the entire western suburbs and we have used many. Two testimonials from me is how they accommodate my schedule which can change daily and how excited my puppies are when they arrive, which I only found out about as I was home one day and locked on an all day work call when my service arrived. Can't say enough good things about them. As well as taking care of your pets, they will water your plants, check your mail and I just love reading the notes they leave after each visit.

We have been using Dogs Love Running! of Elmhurst since the beginning of August. We brought our goldendoodle puppy, Dexter, home at the beginning of the summer. I'm a teacher, so going back to school and finding a person/company I trusted to take care of Dexter when I was at work was really important to me! Amy and her staff of walkers/runners are wonderful! Every day they leave us a note letting us know how Dexter did during his afternoon visit. We really love Dogs Love Running! of Elmhurst and Dexter does too!

We're Extremely Happy

I love the daily "report card" we receive, as it lets us know how our little guy did during the day and gives us peace of mind while we're away. Amy is quick to respond to any questions we have, and I feel that she is a good and responsible business owner. Having this level of confidence is extremely important when it comes to things like this, as I'm sure any dog owner will understand. The walkers themselves do a great job, and I like how the system is set up -- instead of having only one person come out five days a week, there are two walkers who split days. This means that in the event a backup is needed you don't have to worry about a stranger coming to take out your dog. Again, it's a good peace of mind component of this operation. So, all in all, we're extremely happy with Dogs Love Running and would recommend them to anyone.
